Having enhanced the art of choral music for a phenomenal 72 seasons, The Louisville Chorus is the longest-thriving most frequently performing choral arts agency in Kentuckiana and surrounding states—also exceeding the longevity of opera, ballet, and theatre in the area. As well, within the realm of major arts agencies, The Louisville Chorus is only two years younger than The Louisville Orchestra.

The Louisville Chorus has filmed concerts for international broadcast on EWTN, the largest religious media network in the world, and has recorded music for Hollywood in the making of movies. The Louisville Chorus is also a member of Chorus America and has had music chosen for nationwide broadcast on the first nationally distributed radio series to focus exclusively on the art of choral music performance.

A professional chorus  of auditioned singers, The Louisville Chorus annually thrills audiences with the widest variety of repertoire from choral masterworks to pops, holiday, folk, children-oriented, Broadway, and even Bluegrass; releases professional commercial CDs; performs regularly with other arts agencies, including annual involvement with young artists; presents annual benefit shows for charitable organizations; offers its own very active season of concerts and events; and performs for arts series and outreach opportunities throughout Kentuckiana. Fostering the choral art form since 1939 and boasting the expertise of our dynamic Music Director Daniel Spurlock, The Louisville Chorus exudes character, vitality, integrity in the Arts!

In 1939, Father Joseph Emrich founded The Holy Name Band and Choral Club, which later became: The Holy Name Choral Club (1968), The Choral Club of Louisville (1972), and finally, The Louisville Chorus (1987). Joseph Herde succeeded Father Emrich.  Richard Spalding, Conductor Emeritus, lovingly devoted twenty years to this choral arts agency and made possible its 1985 European Sister Cities Concert Tour. From 1991-2002, Music Director Daniel Spurlock ushered this high-calibre ensemble and its audiences into inspirational, poignant, and emotional musical experiences. In January, 2003, The Louisville Chorus was pleased to welcome the expertise of S. Timothy Glasscock as Artistic Director. Therese Davis, Executive Director and Pianist, has collaborated with the music directors since 1969 to ensure high standards and the successful growth and development of The Chorus. In June of 2009 Daniel Spurlock returned as our dynamic Music Director of The Louisville Chorus.

Daniel Spurlock,
Music Director of The Louisville Chorus, served at the helm for nearly twelve seasons through December '02 and returned to the post in June of 2009. He holds Bachelors and Masters degrees from Juilliard and studied conducting with Leon Barzin, John Nelson, and Eric Leinsdorf.  Maestro Spurlock has served as assistant conductor of the National Orchestral Association in New York and The Louisville Orchestra where, as conductor, he performed with such notable artists as Pinchas Zukerman, Yo Yo Ma, Abbey Simon, Lee Luvisi, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, John Raitt, and Buddy Rich. He appeared regularly as conductor with The Louisville Orchestra on various local and out of town concerts. In addition to appearing as conductor with Doc Severinsen on a Louisville Orchestra Super Pops Concert, Mr. Spurlock received high acclaim as Chorus Master for The Louisville Orchestra and 300 voice chorus  performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 8. (for which The Louisville Chorus was the host chorus) " . . . the choruses, beautifully prepared, filled Whitney Hall with the most resonantly natural choral singing yet heard in this acoustically problematic venue. For once, the sound really reached out and engulfed the listener in climactic passages." Courier-Journal. On this same concert Maestro Spurlock conducted the Final Psalmody from Boito's Prologue to Mefistofele. Equally comfortable and experienced on both the orchestral and the choral podium, Spurlock immensely enjoys making music in either genre. He feels strongly that whether it is instrumental or choral, or whether it's Bach, Blues or Broadway, music has much to offer in our highly technological society. Currently, when not on the podium with The Louisville Chorus, Mr. Spurlock serves as Music Director at Beargrass Christian Church.
Therese Davis, Executive Director and Pianist for The Louisville Chorus, earned a Bachelor of Music degree from Jacksonville University (Florida), where she was a student piano instructor, pianist for numerous artists, a member of the Mu Phi Epsilon International Music Fraternity, and a member of the Green Key Honorary Leadership Society. She also performed as solo recitalist and pianist for several Franklin, NC, Fine Arts Festival performers; has coached in chamber music with Walter Trampler, Bernard Greenhouse, and Joseph Silverstein; and participated in piano master classes with concert pianist, Leonid Hambro. She received a Master of Music degree from the University of Louisville, where she continued as pianist and teacher while studying with Lee Luvisi. Therese was rehearsal pianist for the Louisville Ballet, Kentucky Opera, and choral masterworks performances of The Louisville Orchestra, as well as a piano instructor. Ms. Davis also played and coached for the YPAS vocal department. Therese has performed with The Louisville Chorus as Pianist since 1969 and has served as Executive Director since 1981.  She is also in demand as pianist for area functions, music agencies, and performing artists.
